A Helping Hand

Dr. William Montgomery, kneeling, an associate professor of geoscience at New Jersey City University (NJCU), and his students have been working with the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority (JCMUA) to ensure the City’s compliance with the Department of Environmental Protection Stormwater Regulations. With Rajiv Prakash, center, a staff engineer with the JCMUA, and Dr. Montgomery’s supervision, NJCU students have collected Global Positioning System (GPS) data that will be used to inventory inlets, hydrants, and manholes and create better computer models of the City’s water and sewer systems. The students also stenciled messages about not dumping waste into the inlets. NJCU students involved in the project, which covers about 37 percent of the City’s sys tem, included from left are sophomore Padmini Harriram of Jersey City; senior Sandira Robles of Union City, standing behind; senior Rianne Jodice of Weehawken; junior Mark Zdziarski of Nutley, partially seen; Satish Ramrup of Jersey City, stand ing behind; senior Geoffrey Keroti of Jersey City; senior Stephanie Morel of Ridgefield Park; and NJCU alumnus Paul Kaczka, right, of Bayonne.
